The wife's C280 is a 1998 with only 38k miles on it. The MAF code came up as being bad so will change it out. The question I have since this seems to be a fuel controlling device or sensor just as an OX sensor is, would this fall under the emissions warranty?
Of course Mercedes says no as they always do, was curious as how the rest of the world looks at it. Is there anyone out there that has experience with defective mass airflow meters? Help....

My take is that the only way MB could get away with claiming it is not an emission-related repair is if it is a replaceable maintenance item at a mileage less than 50k mi. Is it listed as such in their schedule? Contact an EPA office, or CARB if in California.

Emission warranty is a joke! Other than the ECU & catalytic converters almost nothing is covered!

I assume you are referring to what MB will cover willingly. I have never had a problem with the japanese cars I have owned - the dealers usually willingly volunteer that they will cover it under emissions in CA. Of course, it has been a WHILE since I drove or had a problem with anything with < 50k miles on it.

Look at your warranty book and read what the emmision warranty covers, there is a list of parts.

In this area have heard that according to NC emissions
standards a car with OBD-II that has a check engine light on when being emission tested during an annual state inspection, will fail even if it passes the test. What causes the light to come on should be under the emissions warranty if under 50k miles except for a loose gas cap. of course! Goodwill is a joke and greed is the norm with MB dealers, probably passed down from
the top.

I take that back. The EFI air flow meter is listed as an emission CONTROL device ( as opposed to emission RELATED), and should qualify for 80k mi coverage if this EPA document is current.

What matters is if it's listed in YOUR warranty book.

I agree. The warranty book specifically list the MAF sensor as covered under theFederal emissions warranty of 8 years/80kmiles

The dealer I took my wife's car to is the same that I buy most of my parts from so the service people don't know me. After they told me the MAF was bad they asked if I wanted it changed to the tune of $500! Of course I told them no and took the car.
The next day I returned to the same dealer and spoke to my parts guy who sold me the MAF unit for $238! It takes all of about five minutes to change the part needing only a screwdriver.
Of course the service writer checked the car's records to see if it was purchased there which it was not so attempted to put the screws to me. Obviously I did not bend over for them!
End of story and will not pursue through NHTSA etc.- this time.

Thanks for the info. I take it your car excceded the 8yr/80k miles limitation?
According to the warranty book, it is a Federal requirement that emission systems are warranteed for the 8/80 rule. And, yes, the MAF is specifically named as included under warranty.

I second that. Just checked wife's warrenty booklet (98, C280). Looks like most of the emmission related parts are under 8yr/80K mile rule., O2 sensor, MAF etc.

But even though the car is only a 1998 model with 38,000 miles and the part not listed in the warranty book...at least not my USA version one, the dealer would NOT cover it. Who has precedence here, the US government or Mercedes? Maybe I should try writing a letter to D/C with some EPA subject matter thrown in to pressure them for a reimbursement.
At the same visit they said my H/B was ok even though the original number is 00 00, wobbling and with cracked rubber! The S/W told me the tech looked at it and said it was OK to drive. I asked him if it was his wife's car would he let her drive it....all silence! I now carry the invoice with the OK phrase written on it in the car at all times!
