hose ident question
 

Hi All,

I need help identifying a hose that seems to come off of the radiator. It’s located on the lower passenger side and is encased within a spring. It appears to have an elbow connection to the radiator. The car is an ’87 260E.

Lines encased in a spring are typically trans fluid lines.

Is that that hose that transfers coolant for cooling the tranny?

More accurately, it is the hose that carries ATF fluid from the transmission to cool it.

Hmmm... it's leaking somewhat, but it appears to be leaking coolant... please advise...

The hose fitting might be coming off the radiator end tank. If so, I hope it's not a plastic end tank.

With what I can see from above, it appears to be an elbow (metal) with a compression fitting on what looks like the radiator. The other end of the the elbow is where it continues to a hose surrounded by a spring.

Yes, that is the tranny cooling line. The passenger side has a small elbow at the radiator end, spring covered fitting at the fluid line end. When removing, the radiator end you need just 1 19mm wrench, but at the fluid line end make sure you hold the line nut with a 17 mm wrench as you loosen the 19mm fitting. I suggest replacing the driver side as well, which has the spring at both ends, or as I see the replacements have it springed the entire length. You may lose about 1/2 qt of tranny fluid when removing and replacing these lines.

IF you are CERTAIN you are getting antifreeze leaking and NOT tranny fluid, then you have a radiator leak somewhere above your tranny line filtting.

yes, somewhere above on the radiator, or if you see you leak further back on your tranny line hose and it is antifreeze, look at radiator hoses above it.
Bottom line is to absolutely identify what is leaking. Take a white paper towel and put a drop or two from your tranny dipstick on it, then (when engine is cool) take a drop of your coolant and do the same. Now compare to what is leaking.

I'll double check what's leaking. If it's AT fluid, it's the hose. If it's coolant, it's not the hose but somewhere above it on the radiator. Is this correct???

One hell of advise here. I had a leak recently on the A/C system.
A W124. You think it has nothing to see with your problem ?
Read this : in the garage the leak was spotted on the radiator of the A/C system. I was there when they checked it out with foam
from a canister. A replacement of the rad. at $380 + VAT + labour + new fill up of the A/C was proposed to me.
I did't agree and asked for a fill up with gas and a fluorecent agent. So they did.
Back home I cleaned all the area of the rad.+ connections. Than I used I simple UV-neon light to illuminate the spot and I could easely see it was the connection (high press side) that was leaking. I toke two wrenches (one to hold and one to fasten) and
guess what...no leak anymore!
This is what I should do in your case : clean very thoroughly the area and than after a short ride, check again for leaks. If you think the connections are leaking, use ALWAYS two wrenches to fasten very CAREFULLY the line nuts. Saved me a lot of money !
If it is not the connections...you got already the explanation in former mails.

I will check to see what kind of fluid is leaking and do some troubleshooting.

FYI: Will the AC prob work for me if my AC is shot, not charged, therefore not being used at the moment?

I'm asking since I'm not really sure what other fluid other than coolant flows to and from the radiator or other parts thereof. Anyone care to explain?

It's possible the radiator is leaking coolant at the point the transmission cooler passes through the plastic tank (the the point the hose with the spring attaches to the radiator tank).
I've seen this a few times.
