85 500SEL (Euro?) in U.S.: No reverse

A friend ask my advice regarding their 1985 500SEL which I believe is a Euro model that has been converted ......(Yes I know) and they report not having reverse.

I did several searches through the postings but I didn't seem to find anything particular regardidng no reverse.

They are checking ATF etc, but does this 126 chassis have a trans issue or can anyone suggest a common trans failure regarding reverse?

Thank you in advance,

Haasman

How can you wonder if a near 20 year old car has issues.

As it turns out that trans will probably have issues with reverse. The issue is it will need new clutches and seals in at least reverse.

my 86 Euro 500 SE takes it's time engaging reverse
.I can't understand why reverse is a problem gear as it is used less often and has less power applied to it in general? how do you identify a Euro tranny from US model...........

I don't know if it would help but have you given your friend the obvious basic advice first? Some people don't even know how to properly check the fluid level. I've seen filters clogged so badly that people thought they needed a new trans. when it was not the case. Once Aamco tried to get my Dad to replace a GM tranny because the steering column moved up and down- they told him the tranny was at fault. It wasn't. Before they spend $2500 and probably won't be happy, isn't it worth it to spend a few hours looking for obvious problems that might be the cause. It's easy to tell some poor person, go get a new trans.

Look for the # on vertical surface of case near dipstick tube

the number contains the key number 722._ _ _. Get that number and I or someone else can look it up. Okay. I used to see how long a particular transmission took to go into reverse as basic indication of condition, after I checked the fluid. You want it to snap into gear.

Hey, thanks guys!

These are great responses. I will check the ATF myself and also get the trans #.
