Source for 12pt "torx" for cyl head??
 

Does anyone know a source for a quality "12 point" for the MB Cylinder Head (89 300 CE).

I'm referring to it as a "Torx" but realize that it's not.

I removed the head bolts with a Torx T-55 (6 point) Snap-On Socket but don't want to chance re-installing and torquing the new bolts with a 6 point. I can't seem to find one anywhere. I'll have to possibly have a mechanic friend ask the Snap-On guy for me if I can't find one.

I lucked out the the T-55 for the removal but Know better for the "re-Install". I'll check that site right now.

Lisle Tools - available at many auto parts stores. Here's what you're looking for:

You need the mercedes-benz one. the others will hit the cam towers.

Hazet Tools have them. The one they specifically do for the M102, M103, M104, M119 and M120 is Hazet number 2752. They also have three others in various lengths that will work, Hazet numbers 990-12, 990Lg-12 and 990SLg-12. I have used both a 990-12 and a 990Lg-12 on M103 head bolts.

Got mine at Autozone.

I'll check all of them out. I could'nt seem to find one that would work locally. I lucked out with the removal with the T-55 Torx but don't want to install the new bolts with them. I was actually surprised that I could'nt find one "around".

If you find out the correct length, you should be able to order one from Snap-On.
Hazet usually is the supplier for tools like this for Mercedes, so if you can find a "generic" Hazet one, it's probably the same as MB sells, just without the 3 pointed star and tool number on it.

As JoeR said, most auto parts stores sell a pack of 4-5 12-point bits that fit in a 1/2" socket. Has 8mm for the OM603 and 10mm for the M103. Costs $12-15. No clearance problem in my 300SE which has the same engine as your 300CE. Holds up to the higher torque spec in the W126 CD than what's in the W124 CD for the same engine (what's up with that?).

I got a pack of four assorted bits, which included the one I needed for $9 at Murray's, the local auto parts store here in Detroit (and Chicago). What stores do you have local? Maybe somebody can point you to one of your local auto supply houses to save you from running around or paying shipping costs.

Try your local Sears store. I find their craftsman tools to be pretty durable and at times cheaper than those from specialty tool stores. Pretty easy to return or exchange the item if it does not do the job or it breaks.

Someone recommended here. I was skeptical but, I bought them and used them with no problems. Keep in mind, I am not a pro.;)

Thanks again for all of the advice. I just wanted to pass along my findings.

I was at Sears but could'nt find the proper tool. On a whim, I stopped at a local Pep Boys and found a set of Lisle 12 point's for $15.00. Included 12, 10, 8, and 6mm I beleive.

They are more of a "thin" design as opposed to a "socket" type so clearance is'nt a problem. They look like ones at one of the above posted websites and have a black "impact type" of style to them.

I usually prefer Snap-on or Mac Tools and I have a few Craftsman pieces which are very good. I"m always concerned about quality especially when doing a job like this so I agree with the above comment about Craftsman. Should the tool break, you could always return it. (of Course Snap-on is the same way.) I did'nt check as to if they could order it or not at Sears but did noticed that they did carry Lisle in "my store" so perhaps that is possible..


Just wanted to add my .02 on the Lisle Brand. Quality seemed to be more than "adequate" for the task.

Also, they are a Hex Drive rather than a Square Drive so In my case, I used a Metric Impact Socket on My 1/2" drive Breaker Bar. (I beleive it was 13 or 14mm). Worked like a charm.

Snap-On calls them 'triple square' sockets. M103 requires the 12mm, stock number STSM12E Priced at $26.50, it is hard to argue with all the members who have successfully used the Lisle.
