Run, hide,.............another oil question.
 

With the cold weather rapidly approaching & an oil change coming up, I was contemplating switching to a lighter weight oil.
My warm weather oil is Mobil 1 15W50.
Looking at the options readily available at the store, I noticed all Mobil 1's ( 5W30, 10W30 & 15W50 ) have a pour point of - 45 F.
So what is the point of changing to a different ( lighter ) weight in the first place ?:confused:

Pour point is only one indication. it only means it will ''pour'' at -45, but it does not say at what rate it will pour.
I use 10/40 in winter, 15/40 in summer.

I've been using 10W30 Mobil 1 in the C230 for the last couple winters, and have found it good even at -30C. I buy it in "bulk" (5 litre jugs) and last winter on a very cold night checked it for my own "pourability" test in the bottle. It was VERY liquid, and startling compared to the Quaker State dino 5-30. The QS was like molasses and the M1 was very "sloshy." Impressed me.

I use 20w-50 year 'round. I live in Arkansas, where the winter doesnt get colder than 0*F (VERY RARELY), and usually stays 20*F and above.

More often than not, when I start my car it will have been in the 40's for a few hours.

I just switched over to using Mobil1 0W-40 (was using 15W-50 in all but trucks), now that I can get it at AutoZoo. Hopefully Wal-Mart will start carrying it near me at a better price. Autozoo get $4.99 for one or $4.79 each for twelve or more. Biggest problem is I think they only get 12 in at a time. It takes 45 quarts to do an oil change on my fleet, so I don't mind buying in bulk. Stuff seems to have cut oil consumption in my Suburban, but we shall see over the long haul.
