The ignition lock in my Daughters '81 300D began giving problems. I messed with the lock and finally got it to turn. Once it turns, as long as I leave the key in the switch, everything is fine. Once I take the key out I have to jimmy with it for awhile until it turns again.

I took the lock cylinder out of a parts car. The cylinder worked perfectly in the parts car, but the problem did not go away in the 300D after changing the lock.

Am I faced with replacing the entire steering column to correct this?

Thanks for any help offered,

No, you have to replace the lock assembly. Not just the tumbler. There are 3 parts you will need. The lock, the switch, and the correct tumbler.

Larry, look up the term 'steering column
lock' in the archives. My post had some
informative replies. I had mine changed some months ago and Benzmac is correct to change ALL parts. Plus when you buy the tumbler
you can go the extra step of having it keyed to the original key otherwise you will have a
different key for the ignition (like me).
Good Luck. I saw it done. It's not that bad
of a task but can get tricky getting it all
to set in place and come together.

Or, is it possible to dismantle the steering lock and leave it off? How bad would that be?
