116/123 280S '75 Water Pump Replacement

Hello there...

I posted this originally in the vintage section, but haven't been able to resolve the problem.

Basically - I decided to replace the pump myself, and with some encouragement/advice commenced the task in earnest..

There is one bolt that is concealed behind the harmonic balancer - and I can't get at it.

Everyone has said how easy it is to replace the part (http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/vintage-mercedes-forum/76618-123-water-pump-fitting-post491869.html#newpost) - so I am wondering if I have misunderstood the process. Nobody mentioned removing the harmonic balancer.

Wondering if someone can confirm whether that's the issue.

Below is an image of the offending bolt - Other images of the problem are here: http://www.peachparts.com/shopforum/vintage-mercedes-forum/76618-123-water-pump-fitting-post491861.html#newpost

Stiffy.......greetings from Brizzy

I replaced the water pump on my 1978 280CE w123 several years ago

I had to remove the harmonic balancer.....but it comes off quite easily.........you don't have to undo the crankshaft bolt.......which is just as well as it is at ~400Nm

There are 6 X allen head bolts that come out quite easily if you have the right tools...........buy a good set of allen sockets.......mine are Stahlwille and Gedore (both German) which I got from Trade Tools........looking at mine I think the bolts were 8mm, but you can check the size first with an ordinary allen key

I have a Haynes manual, though not great does cover the pump and balancer removal

Good Luck!

David

Gday,

Thanks for that - I have been back and forth from the tool shop on the pushy three times now - each time I come to a new/different size allen key.

The balancer needs 6mm - and the belt adjustment for aircon needs 8mm.

The only problem I have now is slackening the power-steering - which is, to put it very mildly, a bastard (especially as I don't have a manual - haven't been able to track one down).

Can you remember which bolts do what, in sequence, to loosen the power steering unit/belt adjustment?

I have loosened the bottom right pivot bolt, but there is a hex bolt to its left, which should slide the unit back and forth (has teeth) in order to tighten/slacken - it simply will not budge.

There should be a nut behind the toothed adjusting bolt........loosen this first then the toothed adjuster should work

Link to Pitstop in WA -they should have a suitable manual.....I ordered one from them for my 1990 MX5 and it arrived the next day!

Done

Thanks for that crucial piece of info.

Just on dark, exasperated, cheap tools laying scattered about the street, mothers clutching their children staring aghast at struggling legs splaid and torrent of abuse emanating from beneath the front of the car - I heard the crack of movement from the adjustment nut.

I was just about to give up.

Following morning, pump was replaced.

Everything went back together and the car is mobile again.

cheers.
