Torque for 420SEL oil pan bolts?
Could someone please tell me the proper torque for the bolts on the lower oil pan on a 1989 420 SEL?

Hi Cigar Havana,
it is 11 NM or about 8 ft lbs (as per MB CD) for my '87 420. I assume it's the same for an '89. There are 2 nuts on top of two bolts, which hold a bracket I believe for the AC on the driverside. You have to loosen these nuts, otherwise the bolt will snap when you loosen it. Yes, it happened to me. I hope you have a better calibrated torque wrench than I had. Once you see the gasket split, you know it's too much torque. Mine was calibrated afterwards... Good luck Reinhard Kreutzer |

Thanks
I went to verify the the torque setting in the service CD, which stated 10 NM for the screws. Thank you for your advice about those nuts on the driver side air conditioning compressor retaining bracket. Used a 5mm hex head to remove the screws.

Keep in mind there is a difference in dry vs. lubricated torque. Lubricated (motor oil) torque is about 40% lower than dry torque. Use a solvent to clean the oil from the threaded holes, unless the torque value is specifically for lubricated parts. Overtorquing may cause problems.

Over Torqued?
I put a small dab of anti-seize onto the screws, when replacing them and torqued them to 9.93 NM. I guess I should have only torqued them to 6 NM, since they were lubricated? The manual does not specify lubricated or dry fit.
Also, I understand my wheel bolts are to be torqued to 82 Lbs.. Since I like to put a dab of anti-seize onto every bolt and screw, I guess they should be torqued to only about 50 lbs?

Hi there,
my repair manual states that all nuts and bolts should be clean and lightly oiled, they should not be degreased. You are fine in torquing to specs with anti-seize, although I just use a drop of oil on my lug bolts. Comes out easier, I believe. Reinhard Kreutzer |
