I have stock 97 190 2.3 16V. Will I have problem (e.g. need some modification) in moving the car to California ? Were these originally according to California emission standards?
Thanks for any help. |

Mahesh:
The only thing I'm aware of is my (California) 1986 2.3-16V has "pre-cats" welded into the downtubes of the exhaust coming from the headers. Can't tell you if there's anything else. BTW, where in California are you moving? Brian |

There should be no problems. In the past, when a 49-state car registed in California for the first time, the owner was charged a fee of $300. That fee has be found illegal since last year. The State is in the process of refunding the money.

Should be no problem as long as the vehicle meets the standards for the other 49 States.
be459 makes reference to the now illegal "Environmental Impact Fee" which has been deemed an illegal tax. Many in the state now await a refund, some of us have been here too long to benefit. You will have to take the vehicle to a Smog Check station where they will do a visual inspection to ensure that all emmissions controls are in place and connected. Then they will run the check, which will take at least 30 minutes, and give you a print out of you vehicle's emmissions compared to the max allowed emmissions at idle and 2500 RPM. If the vehicle does not pass, there is a sort of sliding scale ( or at least used to be) where, depending on the age of the vehicle, there was a specified amount that had to be spent of repair to try and bring within specs. The newer the car, the more one had to spend. Yours is a 97, and I would think it should pass fairly easily. ------------------ Mike Tangas 73 280 SEL 4.5 |

Excellent! San Jose is right across my backyard (literally). Campbell and San Jose are border towns. Out here in Silicon Valley all the towns/cities kinda meld into one another. I would imagine you're moving out here for a new job? Glad to have another 16Ver in the local area. Let me know when you arrive and I can introduce you to the shop I use and some of the excellent driving roads. Good luck and welcome to the 'hood Brian |
