I noticed your running temps are high.

Were the photos taken after a warm restart?

Are your average running temps in the 100deg range?

Cheers.

Talking 88 300e problems

Hey guys,

I have a 88 300 with 131,000. It burns no oil and runs pretty good.

Problem I am having is the car has the famous surging idle and rough idle!! The surging is not all the time though. It will usually surge at idle while in park or when slowing down in drive or reverse. Also sometimes when coming to a quick stop it will die. It seems to just keeping dropping in idle. It will hit about 400rpm and then die. I don't thing any of this is a vacuum leak because it doesn't do it over and over again. Oh and usually on a cold start first time it starts it dies, usually starts right back up and stays running.

Also take a look at these pictures.
The first picture is the car in PARK. The economy gauge is almost to the left side. The second picture the car is in DRIVE. The economy gauge is almost in the middle. When I drive though and let off the gas the gauge goes all the way to the left like it should.

Should the guage stay about in the middle with the car just sitting in DRIVE???

Any HELP would be great.... THANKS

Usually when running around town the temperature gauge is on 90. I had turned the car off and then turned it back on after a few minutes.

Fuel economy gauge

My 1988 300ce gauge reads just about like yours in park and drive.
At 65-70 mph even speed it lays all the way to the left.
My temp gauge stays a bit cooler though.

FWIW, the coupe has 60,380 miles on the clock.

Jim

Check the throttle linkage components for sticking. Make sure everything returns to 'full idle' state even when the accelerator is released very gently. Pay special attention to the little plastic wheels and microswitches. Worth trying the simple stuff first...

Sticky linkage is a very common problem, and can lead to all sorts of seemingly random problems.

Heh, I notice that you oil pressure is between 1 and 2. I have a 190e 2.3L 1988, and the oil pressure is always on 3. is this normal? I am not burning any oil what-so-ever.

Any comments appreciated.

As for you economy gauge, I started ignoring mine long ago. I live in a very mountaineous country sot he needle is usually always in the red.

euronatura,

On my 300e when idling the needle stays around 1- 1.5 but soon as I give it gas it goes straight to 3. Not sure if thats right or wrong but thats just what mine does.

From my observations of the various MBs in our local club, they all show different oil pressures at idle - some at 1.5, some at 2, etc...mine is at 2.5.

All of them peg at 3 with throttle.

This is correct.

The different oil pressures at idle can be attributed to the different types of oils used, individual engine condition, etc of the individual MB.

As long as the gauge is not pegged at 3 ALL of the time, you are OK.If it does, you probably have a faulty sender.

I use the gauge as a Service Indicator of sorts.Usually when it's time for an oil change, the oil pressure at idle gets lower than usual (in my car, it would be about 2).Then, it's off to the indie for an oil change.

Cheers.

Azahri:

Just went down to the parking garage to verify the oil pressure gauge. When I turn the key to 1st or 2nd position, the needle jumps upto between 0 and 1. When I start the car, it jumps to 3 and stays there.

I run 20-50 oil in the car. Is this faulty sensor? If so what sensor? Where is it located?

Thanks, Iggy

Oil pressure gauge questions seems to come up all the time. My results vary as well. I question whether that gauge is ever accurate.

Seems other posters have resigned themselves to ignoring it as well.
