1980 300TD Wiper Home position

On my 1980 300TD Euro, the home position of the wipers is 4 - 6 inches above the lowest travel point. While the wipers are running, they cycle properly. In the intermittent mode. The wipers cycle to the high point, and return to the position 4 - 6 inches and pause. With the intermittent cycle restarts, the first movement is to the bottom of the windshield, then up and returning to the position 4 - 6 inches above the windshield.

If the the wipers are runing, weather in low speed or highe speed, they work properly, but when turned off, park at the position 4 - 6 inches above the lowest travel point.

Is there a way to adjust this 'home' position?

Thanks,
Dan Steadman

I am having the same problem with my '89 300SE. I had it apart to drill and tap a ball joint connector on the wiper transmission. Yet, when I put it back together, I am experiencing the same problem. I note you received no responses. Did you ever figure this out?

I guess you had the wiper transmission unbolted from the motor when carrying out your repair and lost synchronisation between the motor and drivehead.
If you tell me what you unbolted I can advise you how to reset the linkage.
George.

This is possible. However, I marked both the motor shaft (I did not remove the motor from the transmission) and the small linkage group (the one with the tension spring which I did remove to perform the repair) which attaches to the motor's shaft with a scribe to insure I align the splines properly. I truly believe I did. I believe at worst I may be one spline off. As described below, I would not think this would create the problem when the wipers "park".

I have again removed the transmission with motor attached to ponder this. With a spare battery, I have applied power to the motor on the bench. The connection is three wires on one side (white, green and yellow) and two on the other side (red (power) and black (presumably ground)). I can get the motor to run in high (white) and low (green) but not on pulse (I presume yellow). Pulse works when all is installed on the vehicle; on the bench I do not have the benefit of the switch on the stalk. When on the vehicle and using the switch on the stalk, the "park position" always places the linkage in the same position. Without the benefit of the switch- just powering it on the bench - I am unable to put the motor in the "park" position. It merely stops where ever it is at the time I cut the power. I therefore presume the switch on the stalk somehow puts the motor in the park position.

The driver's side wiper which travels the entire windshield operates properly with the correct distance at the extremes (up towards the driver's side on glass and the return position under the hood). However, when I turn the wipers off this wiper now will park some 6" plus up the windshield. The passenger wiper will slap at the bottom end (under the hood) as if it is indexed too low. Yet, it also "parks" at the same position as the driver's side wiper.

In reviewing the crazy geometry of the transmission, it appears that if I re-index the linkage group in question on the motor's shaft, the resulting repositioning of the wiper will be moved in the same direction, clockwise or counterclockwise. Therefore, it would appear to correct my problem, I can re-index the linkage one spline counterclockwise (looking at it from the front of the vehicle), resulting in the wipers "parking" lower on the windshield where they belong. Yet, on the passenger side wiper, it is already going too far and am slapping under the hood. I am guessing that the dirver's side wiper would then also be slapping after the re-indexing since now it is perfect distance wise while in operation.

I hope my desciption is clear enough. Talk about "over enginerring". Once I get done with this I will tackle my intermittent heat issue. I should have that figured out by spring when I do not need the heat.

Your thoughts on the matter are greatly appreciated.
