I have a 5-speed 2.3-16. The front of the driveshaft has a doughnut around it which, I guess,is to help with vibrations. This is not the disc between the transmission and the driveshaft. The doughnut is starting to fall apart, can you replace the doughnut or do you have to replace the whole front driveshaft. My mechanic said he has seen this problen with a manuel diesel and he said he could only get the part with the driveshaft. He took the doughnut off and left it off with no problems. Any suggestions. Thanks

Have a 2.316 without the vibration damper on the driveshafts. But they are available as seperate piece from Mercedes if you need it.

That does mean that those vibration dampers are not stock on a 16v?
Are they specially for quite old 16v's ?
Did you buy one?
Is it expensive?
I do have the vibration problem too :-(

I had my driveshaft rebuilt. They rebalanced and painted it...and removed the dampener. 100 k since... no problems

Rebalancing sounds like a very good option, and probably more affordable.
I will call some dealers next week.

It seems that the vibration problem occurs quite often, so I'm glad that I'm not the only one!

I know you are the guru for all things mercedes and I would be v. grateful if you could expand on your reply in this post.The damper can be just taken out?The reason I ask is that today my dealer told me that they are only available with the front of the prop at a cost of.........$700 at which point I almost fainted .So they serve no purpose except to scare the parts buying public!!

MB designed the drive shaft & then found under "some" conditions that there was TOO much vibration, so they added a vibration damper. IF possible always put back the same "stuff" that comes off.
THERE are 2 sizes of this damper for the 2 different sized flex discs that they bolt to.
The PART NUMBERS ARE 202-410-05-47 & 202-410-11-47.
The list price is around $125.

I don't have one on my racecar anymore.

So How do you take the dampner off? I have the same problem in my 86' 2.3-16V.

Ok, I've been browsing through this forum and found quite a bit of information regarding the flex disc replacement. By taking the drive shaft off the tranny, I should be able to get enough room to take the damper off, I'm guessing. I figure while I've got the driveshaft off, might as well replace the flex disc in case it's bad. Looking in FastLane, there are two different types of flex discs. How do I know which one fits my car? I have a US version '86 2.3-16V. Also, would it be a good idea while I'm under there to replace the rear flex disc? Is there anything else that I should be looking for while I'm under there? I don't think I want to touch the center bearing or anything there mainly because I'm not much of a car DIY and it sounds more difficult that I would be willing to tackle. Thanks for any input.
