c280 engine stalls HELP
 

My wife's car stalls when the vehicle is rolling to a stop. This happens intermittently. At first, you could put the car in park and restart the car. Now, sometimes when the car is parked. It will not start. It'll turnover but nothing happens. After 10 minutes of doing nothing... it starts. I took it to my mechanic. He checked out the usually suspect’s ovp, smog hoses, etc. And he said it's difficult to track down the problem because there are no trouble codes. He’s stumped. And he really doesn’t want to start changing parts at random. Any suggestions or comments would be greatly appreciated.

Do a double take on the OVP, if it was made is Austria, change it.

If the ovp is bad, doesn't everything get brighter?

Trust us, it's the OVP (Overvolt Protection Relay). THe originals were manufactured in Austria I believe, and the contacts tend to corrode .. it's an easy swap, and you can get if for $60-ish dollars here on Mercedesshop. Just make sure you get the upgrade part!! PN goes from 45 to 67.

Well, it's not the ovp. The contacts shows no sign of corrosion and it's made in Portugal.

Might want to change out the OVP anyway. And check the fuel pump relay, as that's another common cause for M104 hiccups. Your symptoms are a little different, but...

Coils also go bad on the M104's, but again the symptoms are a little off, but...

The car has a fresh fuel filter and plugs, right?

Just change the OVP. The original ones are bad, even if it "looks good" to you. I don't believe the replacement OVP's are made in Portugal, either.

New- 000 540-67-45

I'm not a big fan of swapping parts until I can verify the source of the problem.

And I think I looked at the wrong part this morning.

Sounds like the fuel filter to me.

OK, more food for thought:

OK, I'm not sure on the C Class about the fuel filter. My original train of thought was that on this, the fuel filter has the pressure regulator integrated into it, not 100% sure this is true or not.
***addendum: I see the filter was replaced (on above thread)--DID THE PROBLEM START when the filter was replaced????***

There is a component on the car which in a way substitutes what the OVP does. It's in the control module box, it's called the fuse and relay module (K40 I believe is it's identifier). It may cause this, it has the fuel pump relay in it, etc, helps distribute power to various control modules.

What probably should be done is a quick scan for trouble codes, and if nothing there the best next step would probably be to drive the car with a fuel pressure gauge installed and monitor fuel pressure when the car stalls.

Another possiblity (because stalling is rather rare on the M112 engine) is maybe the throttle motor (actuator).
