E300 Diesel Turbo convertion?
Ive been looking around the net for performance enhancement.
Come across what looks like garages able to convert a normal diesel engine to a turbo charged one. Can this be done to the merc?

Not Recommended
The factory turbo models have many more heavy-duty truck type features than the NA types -- oil cooled pistons, among other things. If you want to convert an NA Benz to a turbo, get a complete turbo motor of a compatible model.

Sounds like a risky operation, but there is not much data to go on. You might want to compare the specs and equipment for the non-turbo and turbo models. Besides the engine differences themselves, what could make a difference are things like:
To handle the extra power, is the transmission a different model? Is the radiator larger? is there a transmission cooler, or a larger one? The rear end ratios are sure to be different, so the tranmission gear ratios are likely to be different, as well. Are there differences in auxiliary equipment, such as radiator fans and alternator, maybe the fuel injection system. Certainly the whole air intake, air filter, exhaust setup has to be different. Notwithstanding that, I have known a couple of people who had such a change made on various older Benzes. The more successful of the two involved changing out the whole engine and transmission, and living with the rear end difference. In any case, it is a lot of labor and not to be undertaken lightly. I'd put my energy into finding a whole car, instead, i think....

The easiest and probably least costliest in the long run would be to sell your car and find a turbo. You could find one of the W124 2.5 turbo's or the later W210 3.0 turbo.

This company in the UK specializes in turbocharging na engines. http://www.tb-turbo.co.uk/about.htm
They do a lot of Mercedes motorhomes. I talked to a gentleman who had his MB motorhome turboed and he was very happy with it. A lot of people on this list downplay the idea but I don't think anyone here has tried it and can provide empirical evidence. I've seen a number of turboed 240d on Ebay and some of them have high mileage so I'm guessing that they do last. I'd ask that company for specific data on the longevity of their turbocharged engines.

As DavidB29 mentioned already, the 603 non turbo and the 603 turbo are realy two different engines, more than you would expect when reading the code numbers. As you can read on this board, the 603 turbo in it's original shape has allready problems to withstand his own torque and power. So I should forget about converting an ordinary 603 in a 603 turbo if I was you! Just my opinion! Danny
