Broken hose? What is it
 
Help Guys

A small hose ( 1/8 ") that is hardened and yellowed broke. As shown in the photo in blue- it runs it connects with an air filter housing hose and runs underneath the air filter housing to the object shown in the next photo in the blue box. By the way, this is a 1992 300E.

Does anyone know what this hose is and what it does. Does Fast Lane sell the part. So far I do not notice any difference with the engine.

Also what is the object marked in the second photo with a blue line.



I appreciate the help. With the assistance on this forum I drained and flushed the radiator (and block). Long overdue. Next up during the holidays. Bilstein stuts/shocks and subframe bushings. I haven't decided on the differential bushings.

The hose that broke is actually a vent hose that connects from the air filter housing breather hose to the fuel pressure regulator (2nd photo with blue line).

If the diaphragm in the fuel pressure regulator (FPR) fails, fuel will vent thru' this hose from the FPR to the breather hose.

It's not a vacuum hose.

I have seen this hose broken off/disconnected in quite a number of MBs with no problems.

It's common for this nylon line to break. You should be able to buy a replacment length at a Merc dealer. You can also buy a similar size nylon tubing at plumbing supply houses (home depot, etc). Another alternative is to just splice it with some 1/8" rubber vacuum tubing.

The hose that is used is indeed a white vaccum hose (so it is hard), but it functions as a vent hose.

It yellows with age.

Very easy to change.

Just be careful when you're doing the Fuel Pressure Regulator end coz the rubber nipple may be brittle with age and break off.

Also, if you're changing out the old breather hoses (i recommend that you do), you probably have to slice up the old ones at the ends with a pen-knife coz they would be very hard with age.

Other than that, piece of cake.

I changed all the breather hoses, plastic valves and vent hose between the airfilter housing, valve cover and the rotary idle air valve.Surprisingly, the breather hoses came in 3 part numbers and weren't particularly cheap for simple looking pieces of rubber!

The plastic valves that connect between the breather hoses will normally be oiled up and can be cleaned, but because they were cheap, I threw them out and swapped them.

Let us know if you have any problems swapping the hoses out.

I really appreciate your help. Its amazing how much I learn and how we all share ( as i did as I replaced my hood pad). Hopefully when I replace my shocks I will figure out how to reduce the size of the photos so that they will post easier than this one did.

Good idea on replacing the various hoses as the car is now 12 years old.

By the way azhari - nice looking car. The style really doesn't seem to age.
