Have any MB owners found other methods to check rotor thickness /need for replacement.A micrometer seems too much for a once in 5-6 yrs occurence/ie changing the rotors.May as well change the rotors instead of buying a micrometer!Any ingenious way to check thickness would be appreciated.

You could borrow one. The vintage of your car is such that the rotors are not worn out. If you're worried about wear, then just replace them. Don't know the minimum thickness spec for your car. If you haven't turned them (don't if you are thinking about that), then you'll be OK. Just replace the pads as long as the brakes are working OK.

Ahhh, but a micrometer is so handy around the house. You'd be amazed at the things I've used mine to measure. Between gunsmithing, woodworking and general fine, small measurement, not to mention auto repairs, you'll end up using it more than once every 5-6 years.

Having grown up with a father who was a draftsman and mech. engineer...our family projects often ended up with "I don't care if it _looks_ bigger on that end...mic it and lets see." The micrometer is a revered and hallowed tool that still sits in the padded leather case it came in back in 1958 at my folks house. I don't know how much a good mic costs these days, but in the long run it will be worth it.

Gang:

If $$$ are a concern when purchasing a micrometer, check McMaster-Carr Supply Company (www.mcmaster.com) -- an excellent source for MANY things including fasteners, plumbing, electrical, measuring, machining, tools, raw materials, material handling (you get the picture). Anyways, besides the usual Mitutoyo and Starrett line, they carry "Pro-Line" budget micrometers for $21.20 to $30.90 (0"-1" to 3"-4" ranges). The units have a carbide spindle and anvil face, and include ratchet thimble, wrench, and fitted case.

Check um out.
