W202 C220/C230 engine question

Just wondering, what's the engine number designation on the C220/C230 engines? Are these engines based on the M102 block or were they a clean-sheet design for the W202?

Thanks!

The C220 uses a M111.961
The C230 uses a M111.974

The biggest difference between M111 engines is the fuel management system.

Thanks Doc.
Do you know if the M111 is based on the M102 block? And is the block cast iron or aluminum?

Cast iron block! Only thing in common with M102 is that they both are 4 cylinder engines.

TO get aluminum block 4 cylinder you must buy a C230K(1.8L) after 2003 with the M271 engine.
