Question 300E Euro Headlights

where to get them? how to fit them? hard to do for a amateur? any info appreciated. i'm not bothered about keeping the wipers if that makes it easier. Will they pass state tests ok?

Also, anyone know how to change the bulb that lights the auto gear selector positions? and where to get a new bulb?

cheers...

Chazola,

You might want to use the "search" function for this forum. There is more information contributed by so many knowledgeable people that it will confuse you greatly until you can sort through it. Just search on "euros". Good luck.

good luck.

Question Euro Headlights

thanks for the info. I did do a search and a lot of reading but I'm still not quite clear on what I need! From what i gather i'll need- new set of headlights, H4 bulbs, new 6-pin wiring connectors from dealership. can i use my existing surrounds for the new lights or are they a different fit? I was figuring i could have the wipers sitting there (not doing anything) to save on getting the holes filled or buying new bottom bits (technical term there)??
or is it better just to get new bottom surrounds from the dealer?
can the dealer supply the whole kit?

bloody typical all this, I've just moved from europe- I thought everything was supposed to be better over here!:-)

EXCEPT automobile regulations! It's pretty messed up...in Europe you have better car specs, better lights, higher HP engines, more "trick" equipment...but an ordinary person can't afford to have one due to gas prices and taxes! Over here, you might be able to afford the crap, but our federal regulations and sue happy lawyers put a damper on the fun! Hell, a lot of times cars are only offered in Europe period because they don't want to spend the time and money doing all the modifications necessary for having them approved over here.

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class Owner's Bible (ISBN 0-8376-0230-0, $39.95) has a very detailed description of the conversion to European headlights. The cost is about $900 w/o conversion to the Euro headlight wiper assembly.

This conversion includes the Euro vacuum headlight height adjustment mechanism. The headlights are from Hella, the bulbs are from Osram. The starter booster relays are from Volkswagon. The 6-pin connectors, Euro headlight switch panel and Euro vacuum switch are from MB. There are other parts like wiring and vacuum hoses that are required.

I have no idea what the cost would be by using lesser known sources.

There are two versions of the Euro headlights from Hella (1986-1989 & 1990-1993).

If one were willing to use the parts described, the book does a good job of detailing the conversion. It does not describe the conversion to Euro wiper assemblies but I think you might be able to use the U.S. version of wipers with the Euro headlights with some differences in wiped area.

The book says the conversion to Euro wipers would cost an additional $700.

If my car was newer, I'd do this conversion in a NY minute (not sure about the wiper assembly). My next car will have bi-Xenon headlights.

I should mention that this conversion is essentially to a rally light configuration with much brighter bulbs and the ability to turn on fog lights with high beams.

euro headlights

thanks for the replies. I've got the e-class bible on order. It's seems a lot of people on here are managing to do the conversion for cheaper than stated in the book though. I'll have to do some hunting.

I couldn't beleive how crap the light output from the normal US lights is- same on my wife's dodge. Back in England I had a Turbo Diesel Peugeot (rather slow off the mark, engine sounded like it was gonna hop out the bonnet at 80mph, but v. reliable & cheap)
whcih had great headlights. now I'm here i can't belive how they can get away with having such crappy headlights and no cat's eyes on half the roads! makes night driving rather nerve-racking..!

ho-hum, well at least I can actually afford to run a Merc over here, without needing a 6-figure salary:-)

Don't blame Mercedes for the lousy headlights, blame the U.S. government. These are the same people who made Mercedes put sealed beam headlights on my 190D.

Yup! You can do it for a lot, lot less. I got Bosch corners (with the amber strip) from a dealer (independent dealer, not a MB dealer) who sells on eBay. Then a few weeks later, started a running coorespondence with a different vendor in Georgia about getting Bosch euros with all the necessary parts, including the height adjustment panel and rosette dial. Can't remember for sure, but I think it was in the neighborhood of $650 for the whole works, including corners (which were $100 by themselves).

vendor for euro lights

Bekker's is the vendor in Georgia the previous post mentioned. Bekkers.com. They sell Euro light conversion parts for $500 for the earlier 124 and $550 for the later ones; you can get the Euro clear lenses for another $50 or so as part of the kits. That includes the bulbs and some other stuff, maybe even everything you need (except maybe the vacuum adjust and wiper stuff).

I got my Hella Euros from Puma. I'm sure you've seen the name if you've been reading the Euro lights threads. I got them for $450.00 shipped. They also included the 6 pin plug and extra pins for the conversion.

the 500e lights are different - the inner lamps are driving lamps (narrow beam), not fog lamps (wide beam). Just the thing needed for such a high-performance car.

There is a North American 500e lamp and a Euro 500e lamp. And that of the E500 is different, still. But all these have driving lamps as their inner lamps (I'm not sure if there is such a thing as a Euro E500 lamp - perhaps the E500 owners can confirm this).

you can get 500e euro hella lights from paul at
www.puma-access.com

you will have to call. they are a LOT more than 450.00, that price was a group buy.

you asked earlier what are 'clears'. they are probably the white/clear european spec w124 front turn signal indicator.

bosch or hella are the best, lights and corners of course they were oem.
mercedes [used to] use items that last.

one poster said there are 2 kinds of euros 86-89 90-93.

this is incorrect, '86-'93 early ones [on cars with full grill] and '94-'95 late ones. the late ones are angled more on the inside corner of fog lights to fit different hood.

earlier member 'bud' posted conversion is 900.00.

i did all my stuff for around 900.00, i have more goodies than the star article says. [ i had to spread some of this out so the wife didn't have a stroke]
i have bosch euros, bosch clear corners, OEM beam adjuster [switch panel and rosette/dial], the euro wiper set up.

the euro wiper set up is virtually the same as the later w124's '94-'95. you can buy all this stuff here at fastlane.

i have posted most all of the part numbers needed here,
Euro Light Acc. Part Numbers
