new discovery
I don't know why this has never been checked before, but I just checked the air filter housing and voila, there is oil getting sucked into the housing. Does this mean that there may be a line partially blocked? Also, I have changed the oil cap and the dipstick seal and for 2 days, the car has consumed zero oil. Could the cap and dipstick seal have contributed to the oil consumption?

Oil filler cap and loose dipstick will dump quite a bit of oil on the road, even if you don't get drips on the drive.
I don't think they will contribute to oil in the air filter housing though. Peter

Me.. 89 300SEL..150K.. I uesd to use about a quart of oil per 700 miles.. I have added oil stop leak for the past two oil changes, and my oil consumption has completely stopped.. It wasn't leaking, but I suspect the the valve stem seals were the problem. In any event, my problem has gone away for now anyway
Maybe I just had sticky rings from the previous owner's neglect?? May not be a long term solution, but it was a cheap, and easy patch, and oil is plentiful, and cheap.. Jay
