Question 500E inconsistent clank right rear

1993 70,000 miles. The noise is more frequent off the line and not at speed or necessarily over bumps. The control arm bushings appear to be ok All bolts are tight.

Another post indicated checking the differential mounting bolts. Where are they? If loose would the sound only come from the rear passenger side?

I'm going to replace the upper left link (if I can get the rusty bolts off). Do I need to compress the spring?

Thanks

Jack

Jack,

Can you provide a better description of the sound you're hearing? Does it occur over larger bumps or does it strictly occur from a stop?

From my limited experience some sounds are caused by failed hydraulic spheres in your trunk. If the ride is harsh and stiff over bumps this may be the cause.

If your located near other members maybe someone can listen or suggest a good independent shop to take care of the problem.

The sound is more of a creak, therefore I'm leaning more towards bushings than spheres. The noise started after I changed the rotors and the springs for the parking brake.

I'll probably dimantel the rotors again to see if parking brake components are loose.
