If I recall correctly, '83 300D was not available in USA with manual transmission--yours must be custom or gray market--which might explain the lack of coverage in the CD.

"Service manual" and "transmission" in same sentence made me stupidly assume "manual transmission. Regarding my post above ... never mind.

There are some references to the automatic transmission in the CD's if you dig. I know that they give specs on vacuum and diagrams.

Good luck. If you can't find them, I'll point you there.

Also, there is not info on the internal workings.

What section of the c/d would I begin to dig in? It/s an automatic. While were on the subject what would a reasonable price for rebuild or major service or should I worry with only 182K on vehicle. I have some of the same problem's as most people. eng rev between 3rd & 4th. some hard shift's from 1st to 2nd to 3rd.

MB was always poor on info for their transmissions. When I first worked on MBs (1974) they gave nothing but removal instructions and external adjustments. We were to install exchange units.

The best book from MB is the Theory of Operation Manual 722.3/4. It would probably be available through 1-800-FOR-MERCedes. The best book for working on the tranny is the ATSG book; see:
