Strange CE light / hesitation problem

I have a 1997 C230. The check engine light came on a while back, I reset the light by disconnecting the battery - it would come on again 1-2 days later. I also experienced a little hesitation when the car was warming up.

A couple of weeks ago, I changed the battery. Both of the above problems disappeared. There is no check engine light and the hesitation is gone.

What could have been the problem??

Thanks!

Could be battery/charging system related.
Could also be related to changes in temperature/ weather as well.

My Dad's (now gone) C230 did the same thing. The battery low-voltage tripped the CE light, (I didn't know that enough "low voltage" conditions will trip the light) and then the failing battery caused there to be not enough juice and the car ran a little badly until things got going.

A new battery solved the problem.

Cool, thanks for the replies. I never thought the battery had anything to do with the check engine light either, that's why I ask.

The charging system seems fine, the previous battery was 6 years old and as I noticed when removing it, the acid levels were very low.

Thanks again.
