How do I go about replacing the pre-fuel filter and the main-fuel filter on a '98 E300DT? I have the replacement parts and the tools, just new to Benz, diesels and these type of filters and working on these cars, don't want to break anything. Thx, Jay Quinn jpquinn@home.com

Jay,
Assuming that the TD is the same is my '96 E300D was, it's a pretty simple operation. Loosen the bolt for the main filter, remove and replace, it helps to fill it almost full before replacing because this will decrease the time for running the starter while bleeding. Then remove the lock down bolt for the prefilter. MAKE SURE YOU PUT THE O-RING ON THE PREFILTER. Then put the prefilter down in place and replace the lock bolt. After everything is tight, crank the engine until it primes and starts. This one is called self bleeding. If you get everything back together sealed up right, it should start pretty quickly, just keep on cranking. I missed the o-ring the first time I did mine and it would not crank. The new filter did not have the o-ring on it. Good luck, ------------------ Larry Bible '84 Euro 240D, 523K miles '88 300E 5 Speed '81 300D Daughter's Car Over 800,000 miles in Mercedes automobiles |
