Hi,
I have bought a used 97 E420 with a 55k only on odometer. However, on a recent trip to local MB Service center where I planned only to change oil and filter I was told that both front Control Arm Bushings are worn and need a replacement. I did not argued with the service center since I did experience some uncontrolled movements in the front of the car when making turns at high speed. My question is then to understand why a car with a low mileage have such an "old age car" defect? Is it an alarm for me that the car might have been seriously abused by the previous owner or worse the odometer has been tempered with ? Sincerely, Stan Levin. |

The rear bushing of the lower control arm is hydraulic like the motor mounts. MB has done this to soften the road vibration that comes through the chassis. They used to use a separate subframe to absorb. As with the motor mounts these bushings work great when new but fail much quicker than hard rubber. MB parts system says that there is a new number for the original part and the old number is no longer to be used.
This usually means they have improved the part. I didn't see any service bulletins but I didn't look very hard. ------------------ Steve Brotherton Owner 24 bay BSC Bosch Master, ASE master L1 26 years MB technician |
