I need to change the oil in my 1980 450SL and I do not have the tool necessary to remove the drain plug. I have hunted high and low for a 14mm socket/hex or 14mm allen wrench and cannot locate one. Does anyone know where i can locate one?

Thanks!

Don't know where you are from, but Autozone has a good selection of metric tools.

Or call an industrial supply place. You can get that one key for three or four dollars.

Try a NAPA auto parts store. At least they can usually order one for you.
That size allen wrench is amazingly difficult to find anywhere else.

Good luck.

I got a 12 mm allen key socket (they had any size you can imagine)from the Snap-On truck that comes to my workplace for those funny Japanese style lug nuts. I am an engineer, but we have mock-up facilities out back. I just asked the guys when the truck came and I didn't even have to leave my office building. Expensive, but I'm one of those funny people who believes in buying tools for life. Lesser quality brands of this style socket are known to fail often. Paul

I agree with PJozcfiak...cheap is cheap.

14mm hex is not available from Sears or other half-way decent tool providers.

I also got mine off a Snap-On truck - $21.00 about 3 yrs ago, but the thing will last
forever and Benzes are special.

Regards.

Just got my 14mm hex drive from SnapOn as well. Still about twenty dollars. Serious build quality, should last longer than a hand built Benz.

There is a special Mercedes wrench with a 14mm hex insert in one end and a box end at the other. Can't remember the P/N but your local dealer should be able to provide you with the wrench. It's made in Germany by Hazet (the Snap-on of Germany). Or you can try http://www.baumtools.com They should have it too.

You can also get a 14mm Allen-head socket from any auto parts store that carries "Proto Tool" brand -- they've got a nice one for about $20 -- I bought one. It may not be as fine as Snap-On (from what folks have written here), but it's sure substantial.

Performance Products (www.************************) has a nice wrench with 14mm offset allen (diff and tranny) combined with 13mm box-end socket (oil drain plug) for $29.95 (P/N 58-043). You can also call at 1-800-243-1220.

Hope this helps.

What is the correct size of the oil drain plug on a 1988 300E? Is it also a 14mm allen wrench?

As Aaron said, the MB part is made by Hazet and has an offset 14mm hex plug on one end and a 17mm box on the other. It is sold by MB part No. 000-589-07-00

I got a complete set of metric, allen-head sockets in 3/8 and 1/2 inch size. The sockets range from 4mm to 24mm. I got them at the local ACE hardware store about 4yrs ago. They are STANLEY brand and have a lifetime warranty. So far, they have performed as well as my Craftsman and Snap-On tools, and the price was less than $50.

Just my thought on 'special' tools and the way around their high cost.
