Hi Guys! 300e gone to the Salvation Army
 

It's been a while ,but I donated my 1989 300e with 220K to the charity. I had to get a new car for my daughter to take cross country to So Carolina and the old girl wasn't going to make it.
Got top dollar for the donation and the truck driver wanted to know what was wrong with it. said nothing. Hope someone can use it. My wafe was sad because all her babies learned to drive in the Benz and protected the kids for six faithful years.
Fear not ,I just bought a BMW325is for my son that we will be fixing up. 1987 with 114k org. It flys.

Did the title get signed over when you parted company with the car?

There was an interesting story on the tube about this awhile back. Seems alot of these charities will take a functional car and use it for personal transportation. Meanwhile the title is still in the name of the previous owner. The charity never bothers to file the title. Weeks pass and whooooops!!! the car is involved in an accident and guess who's still on the hook?

I've also donated a car before but needing work not worth pouring money into. The charity usually asks for the title to be signed over, but to whom left blank. This way when the car is repaired they can sell it quicker is the excuse they give. BTW here in NC if the DMV finds a car with an open title the car can be seized. For liability purposes it is best to tell the charity the title will be signed over to them and if they don't like that, find another charity. Charities receiving cars should also hold a dealers license to operate properly with the DMV.

In California there's a release of liability form you submit to the DMV when a car leaves your charge. It's not your problem if the subsequent owner doesn't apply for a title or register the car in his/her name. Also helps to notify your carrier.

In Kentucky, YOU are liable until the car has been properly registered in someone else's name, period. There already has been a case go to the Ky. supreme court and that was their decision based on some very poorly worded legislation from the elected reps in Ky legislature. As Will Rodgers said, "We have the best politicians money can buy".

I have donated 2 cars over the years to the American Lung Associaiton.

I highly recommend this organization. You must first sign over the title and mail it to them, they will send you a copy back. When they receive the title they will contact a local towing company to tow the vehicle at their expense. I recently donated my 1988 Honda Accord with 182K miles and replaced it with a 2001 Acura TL with 69K miles.

The situation in Kentucky applies in other states as well. I like California's approach as described by Sixto.
