Did the 88 300E have a three speed transmission? The transmission part number on my 300E is 124 270 30 01.

Four speed auto or five-speed manual.

This is of concern to me since I replaced the original transmission which was not working when I purchased the car. The model numbers on old and new transmissions matched but its possible the rebuilt transmission was not properly rebuilt.

Your transmission starts in second gear unless you mash the throttle and get the kickdown to start you in first. Having said this, it will seem to you that under normal acceleration, you only have 3 speeds.

The transmission identifier on a MB is located on the lower right hand side above the side of the pan. It is stamped in the side. It will say 722.3xxx-xxx-x
