If, as you say, you can make it squeak standing still. Get a length of garden hose, put one end to your ear, get someone to make it squeak and move the other end of the hose around until you locate the source.

i am fairly certain you have some broken welds on the chassis. i had an IDENTICAL complaint on one of my customer's cars that ended up being broken welds that were not visible, but could be verified by pushing around that area with the fender off. i probably spent a week chasing this noise and finally was able to locate it. there is actually an old service bulliten somewhere concerning these broken welds, but i remember it being someplace quite weird, and have been unable to locate it. it ended up going to the body shop to have it corrected, and my customer has not heard the noise since.

Let's hope it's not the welds! Just in case, if anyone has a copy of the service bulletin I'd love to see it.

it's not as bad as it sounds...i think the body shop only charged me about $250.00 for the repair. i would recemmend taking it in and showing them the spot (hell, bring it in with the fender off). My netstar is down today but i think there is actually a bulliten in group 94 (chassis noises). your symptoms match this exactly. i hope everything turns out ok. let us know what the outcome is.

more info.

Emailed the previous owner about the squeak. He confirmed that it appeared after the windsheild's installation. Said that it would only happen when hot and disappeared when the car was driven in the rain. Seems to point to windshield hardware, a poor fit or possibly some stray glass form the previous windsheild. The new glass is PPG. I will try and have it looked at next week. I am reluctant to attack the trim around the glass for fear of costing myself some $$ due to a lack of proper tools and experience! If anyone can recommend a competent glass installer in the SF Bay Area (East Bay) I'd be interested. I'll post any new findings.

taken from Stu Ritter's book, "Mercedes-Benz E-Class Owner's Bible 1986-1995", BentlyPublishers. and these threads:

W124 Rattle Doctor - PLEASE HELP
did you weld A pillar of your W124?
Anyone Else with A-pillar squeeking on '94 W124?

Problem All E-class
Clacking noises at A pillars near engine hood hinges.

Possible cause, suggested repair
a. Weld seams between reinforcement panel and A pillar missing. Weld panel to A pillar
b. Check wheel house paneling behind reinforcement panel for cracks. MIG weld cracks.

From the drawing the reinforcement panel would be near the top of the fender and weld to the pillar comng down from the roof.

It shows 2 weld points upper point 40mm top to bottom lower point 20mm top to bottom.

The wheel house Paneling (behind it) extends down from the upper frame piece along the top of the fender.
