I have a 1991 300E2.6 with dual aux cooling fans. But only one (passenger side) runs when I apply power across the 2-pin connector. Since I might just have short or bad ground, how can I check for a bad motor without pulling it (it looks like a real pain to do)?

By the way they are wired, it almost has to be a faulty fan. They share the same ground and power input. If you hit the fan on the nose of the motor with the other one on, it may come on. If so, it is at fault and should be replaced soon.
