Hazard Button Buzzing '79 W123 240D

Well, I just took my first 500 mile trip and she ran like a top! I pulled of the highway to fill up with $1.39/gal diesel and when I cranked her back up the red hazard flasher button began buzzing and will only cut off when depressed or the turn signals are used. Does this indicate a problem and is there a remedy short of bypassing the buzzer?

Ken, I have never heard of a hazard switch that buzzes. Did the flashers activate at the same time?? How about the ignition buzzer?? If the hazard switch buzzes that's a new one on me..

Seen many a buzzing flasher. Usually activation of the emergency flasher switch a couple of times sets everything in order. Otherwise a new unit may be the answer.

Steve, tell me about the buzzing. what is it related to. A relay or the flasher?? I understood Ken to say his switch was buzzing. Am I missing the point here??

I have tried pushing the switch many times and the buzzing remains...

Steve, what causes this? And what is the function of having a buzzer there in the first place?

I don't think the hazard switch has a buzzer. Steve must be referring to the flasher malfunctioning.

If I remeber correctly the flasher relay is part of the emergency flasher switch on early 123 chassis. The buzzing is a sound that a flasher makes when its frequency is screwed. Take it out and smack it one(bg).

If banging it around a bit doesn't fix it I imagine a new one is the answer.

The banging did the trick! I removed the switch and reinstalled it, then jiggled it around a bit and the buzzing stopped. If it happens again, I will replace the switch.

I've dealt with this several times over the years.

The switch is in a location where lots of dirt, french fry salt, you name it can get down into it. I have replaced this switch before, and I also have carefully taken them apart a few times, cleaned everything up and reassembled them, with great success. Some people would feel comfortable doing this, and some may not. If you can't fix it this way, they're not very expensive.

The switch does not have a buzzer, but it will buzz.

Is the hazard switch in your 81' 300D the same as 84 240D? Southern Sloth's 300D has the older style switch which contains a relay as Steve said. It is about $80. The later 300D switch contains no relay, cost: ~$20. The two swithes look different.
