Door handle question
When I open the driver's door on my SE, the handle doesn't spring back like it should. It sort of becomes stuck in the "pulled position." It snaps back, but its action isn't as smooth as the rear doors.
Perhaps there is some crud built up in the handle spring mechanism? I know its a small problem, but it bothers me so I would like to fix it, if it can be done easily. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Mike

Are we talking the inside or outside handle?
I'm assuming outside. You could just remove the handle from the door, then clean and lubricate the works. Also gives you a chance to ensure there are no broken bits in the works that might be causing it to stick.

Ooops, yes, the outside handle. I tried removing it (per your instructions in an older thread) and cleaning the moving parts, as well as lubricating with lithium grease. No luck.
Hmm. Perhaps a more involved disassembly will be required, as I left the handle attatched by the alarm and vacuum lines and access was limited. Will report back tomorrow with my findings. Thanks for your reply. Mike (ps- on a different note- your picture of the sunroof wind-deflector springs (old thread) was extremely helpful a few weeks ago)

Ok- I took the passenger side exterior handle off, for comparison reasons. They seem a bit different, this is correct?
I found what was causing the driver's side handle to stick in the open position- the vacuum line is routed under the assembly and then up through it, then back towards the inner part of the tumbler. Is this correct? It seems like it should be routed on top of the workings, so it wouldn't get snagged like it does? I realize my lack of a picture makes this way more difficult than it has to be I did look at the CD manual pics- insufficient clarity. Any ideas?

How do you remove outside door handle?
I just need to tighten the door handles. They work well, but they are a little loose and move slightly up and down, making scratch on the paint. The gap will also allow moisture to go in and develop rust, I think. Last edited by ktlimq; 12-01-2003 at 03:24 PM. |

Open the door. locate the black plastic plug which covers the access hole to the screw. It should be on the trailing edge of the door somewhere above the "cone latch."
Take the screw out and pull the door handle foward. It might be stuck, if so whack it with a foreign object. Insert key in lock and turn to either 2 or 10 o'clock and pull the handle out while turning the key. You gotta kinda feel it give. Its cake. Be careful not to pull to hard, as the handle will still be attatched to the vac and alarm lines. Don't drop these in the door unless you like removing the interior panel.
