PS pump leak etc - need some advice
 

C280 1996

I have a leaking power steering pump. Not too bad. Should i just replace the fluid or go ahead and replace the pump - about $300.

Also I evidently have a leak on the differential. This concerns me more as I cannot add fluid to it.

Any advice would be appreciated - Thanks!

Either replace the pump or keep adding fluid. Replacing the fluid won't solve or improve anything.

WHY can't you add fluid to it?

The usual leak is the side seals or the front (pinion) seals. It would be a tough DIY job.

I have a Land Rover that leaks all the time. Instead of fixing the leaks I just add fluid. Nothing major has happened.

So my question is do power steering pumps on MB get progressively worse? If I just have to add fluid occasionally then i might wait a while since I have other leaks - like the head gasket. That one has been going on for a while and I haven't bothered replacing it since the oil level does not drop much between changes. Has anyone had success with a stop leak product?

As far as the differential - Obviously I can add fluid to it but like you stated, Jilly, it will be a PITA.

Usually the power steering pump leaks don't get progressively worse on these. On the models with steering gear boxes, those steering gear boxes DO get worse with time, but the pumps normally take a long time before you have a real bad leak. Your C class has rack and pinion, not a steering gear box.

I'm not suggesting it's a PITA to top it up occasionally. I'm saying it would be tough to repair the differential leak yourself.
You stated you CAN'T add fluid to it, which is false, it's fairly easy to add fluid to it.

what color is your PS fluid?

If it is red, get it out of there because it is most likely ATF.

Change the fluid to any PS fluid at least, but you may want to try one with "seal conditions" .... can't hurt at this point. You could also change the filter although I don't think it is a direct contributor to the pump leaking.

If the above doesn't work, check around for quality rebuilt units. You give them your core. I have had good luck with these, as long as you get one that is correct for you car and rebuilt properly.

Also check with this site's part department. They are great and very helpful.
