Need quick help... 2.8 head on a 3.0 engine??
Hi,, i have the oppurtunity to buy a rebuilt cylinder head off of a 2.8 103 engine... however, i have a 3.0 103 engine.. will the head fit without any problems or should i stay away from this deal?
The head is off a 1988 300E 2.8 , my car is a 1991 300E 3.0.. Thanks |

I don't know the answer to the question - but I don't think there is a 1988 2.8 103 motor, at least not in the U.S. Sure it's not a 2.6?

Im just going by what the guy at the shop told me,... if it is a 2.6 will it fit my 1991 300e 3.0?

There is no 2.8 M103. only M104. there is 2.6 and 3.0 M103. that is it, at least in standard form (ie, no AMG mods, etc.)

Maybe a dealer parts guy can help - if the 2.6 and 3.0 liter heads have the same part numbers you should be fine. Otherwise I'd be wary.

Heads are not the same
I have two heads in front of me, and one says 2.6, the other 3.0. There are certainly minor differences; even though rockers and camshaft are identical, valves are different.
The 2.8 is a (later) M104 engine - completely different. No way it could fit!!! Perhaps a 3.2 head would fit on a 2.8 but I wouldn't try it the other way around. My two bits Vivian
