Transmission only shifts at high rpm's
I tried a search for this problem, and it seems to either the b2 piston, the vacuum modulator, or the bowden cable. My 1986 560 SEC sat for about two months without use until I replaced one of the fuel pumps. Now, for some reason, it won't shift into third below 2,200 RPM, or into 4th below 2,800 RPM. The fluid level is fine, and I plan to have the fluid and filter serviced. Has anyone had a similar problem? I tried changing the linkage throw to the bowden cable, but it had no effect. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

If you are sure the ATF and all are good, I would guess it is a bad vacuum modulator on the side of the trans .... or the vacuum connections to it. Soemone posted a similiar complaint and it turned out to be the rubber tube between the vacuum line and the vacuum modulator. Hard and brittle, was the description. Haasman

Thanks, Haasman. I happen to have a new vacuum modulator that I was going to use in my 560 SL. I think its the same for the 560 SEC, so I'll try installing it and see if it helps. What are the symptoms associated with the b2 piston? Given the year of the car (1986), it would seem to be susceptible to this problem also. God, I wish I had been born rich instead of good-looking (LOL).
