where to find cheap euro headlights? W124

OK folks-

Someone kicked in the headlights on my 86' 300E...
Does anyone know where to find the most reasonably priced european headlights so that I can see at night... I originally had the lame plastic US versions and I would like to make the swap as easy as possible. Also, I don't HAVE TO have Bosch or Hella, and what type of connectors are needed?

Any help anyone could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, and Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!

There is a brand of aftermarket Euro lights called DEPO.

There are a number of guys on this site that have installed them and been very happy with them. I watched one member, Ashman, install them on his 300CE, and I couldn't tell the difference between them and my OEM Bosch Euro's.

Contact Ken at Importvision:

http://www.importvision.com/

Do a search on "Depo" on this site, and you'll get a lot of results.

euro's

Check Ebay they have some very aggressive pricing on there. I picked up my depo's for the 560 with the conversion kit and bulbs for $250. If you are patient you can get them for less. I have been very happy with the euro's.

While waiting for ebennz . . .

I've looked at the Depo and TYC "OEM-like" euro replacements and have found that they pretty much have the OEM fit and features, except in two very distinct areas. First, there's no question that the Bosch and Hella units are heavier. There's no comparison in "heft." Second, on internal inspection, the higher cost units by Bosch and Hella appear to use thicker wiring and more robust electrical connectors, so if you ever plan on using slightly higher rated bulbs, you would be better served by using the Bosch or Hella. If those are not considerations, DEPO and TYC are fine.

jeff-abalone 11-26-2003 04:20 PM

Bosch or Hella using better materials. The reflectors are much better than the Depo. If the price not much different, I will buy the Bosch or Hella for sure. ;)

JFAZ 11-26-2003 07:26 PM

OK, thanks for all the great suggestions. I think I will be giving importvision a call to order the DEPO's. I am still waiting for this guy Ebennz to comment though...

is it THAT BAD??????

i don't want to disapoint cap'n and suginami...ready

any brand euro is light-years ahead of the crappy dot junk on the w124's.

i [personally] am a bosch and or hella purist.

the folks here that have the depo lights, are satisfied as we speak.

you will have to buy the connectors, importvision doesn't offer them.

i have some extra osram silverstars h4 and some yellow/gold h3's. e-mail me if interested.

cap'n/ suggy- how did i do?

now, let's talk about clear indicators........where the hell is my soap box?!?!

You did great!

You treated the subject with kid gloves.

For the record, I'm a Bosch / Hella purist, too.

However (comma space) I'd like to disclose that I've heard nothing but negative comments about the TYC Euro's regarding poor fit and finish.

Everyone that has bought the Depo's has been happy with them. As I've posted before, I visually inspected Alon's (Ashman's) Depo's when he did the install on his 300CE, and I couldn't tell the difference from my Bosch Euro's, and least from the outside. They were solid and just as heavy, and appeared to have similar construction. I remember that they were made in Europe, too, possibly Holland. I didn't break them open, so I can't comment on whether the internals are different, or not.

jeff-abalone 11-27-2003 01:25 AM

Depo is made in Taiwan, not Europe.

There's nothing wrong with being a purist. We ALL should be. I'm a cheapo. There is one thing for sure when buying aftermarket parts, you run the risk of substandard material. If you get something good then you're lucky. If you get crap, then you got what you paid for.

Ebennz, how did I do?? (BTW, one of my Procarparts clear corners has a crack in it. I should have listened to ya!)

JFAZ- it looks like we're taking over your thread. don't worry, you're in good hands.

you might look in the [few] mercedes forums-classified sections or e-bay for your euro's.

any luck yet?

I'm interested in upgrading the lousy DOT headlites on my S124. I haven't fully investigated the design of the headlite housing yet, but can the original headlite wipers be adapted to fit the upgraded Euro headlite housings? Other than the plug connectors, what else is needed to for the upgrade? Relays, bulbs, wiring?

Thanks.

ebennz 11-30-2003 01:09 AM

some people have done this...

imo it doesn't look right, it looks like the job wasn't finished.

you have to make brackets, even if you do this it won't wipe the whole assembly.

the easiest way to have the wipers is get the parts for a '94-'95 w124

try the 'search' feature here and search 'euro lights' , 'euro light wipers'.

most places that sell bosch or hella lights provide bulbs-h4, h3, t4w and also include the turn signal covers [euros are dark amber], also 6 pin connectors and instructions.

from what i read if you buy the 'depo' brand euros, it does not include anything but the assemblies.

everything you need [except the cash] to know is posted here.

they're the best money i have spent on my car.

you guys let us know how the quest is going

Did the Importvision W124 Euros come with the lenses? $250 for the pair looks cheap and I can't tell from the photo if they're there or not.

yal 02-17-2004 05:41 PM

Yes Captn they do come with lenses.

Cap'n Carageous 02-17-2004 06:36 PM

Thanks Yal!!

Crazy old fart??? LOL!!:D Yes, that would be ME alright!!!;)

Seriously though, something in the photo of those just doesn't look right to me. Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought that Euros had a detachable lense that covers the headlamp and the foglight. I don't see that in the Importvision photo.

ebennz 02-18-2004 11:47 AM

cap'n

all w124 euro lenses have removable lenses, even the expensive ones-the like of depo and tyc.

yes they are all changable and they are 1 piece. headlight lense on one side fog light on the other.

i can send a pic if that would help.
