transmission not doing anything

I have an 89 560 sel w/ 105,000 miles, I put the last 5,000 on it and everything has been fine untill yesterday. I did 1,400 miles in 24 hours (palm beach to NY) and the following day it did about 30 miles fine then I put it into reverse and nothing, put it back into drive and nothing. Checked the fluid level, no problems, engine is running fine, etc.. Just the transmission is compleatly non responsive out of the blue. Please help, stuck at inlaws on turkeyday.

I'm sitting here wondering how you checked the fluid level. The car has to be hot (run at least 20 minutes), in park and idling when you check it. Put it into low and then into park prior to getting out to check it. You may have to look at the dipstick more than once too. If it is leaking or the seals are tired that haul butt ride up I95 may have blown it all out. Otherwise, I would start looking for a rebuilt tranny. Does the pa in law have a lift? Could be something you and he could do over the next couple days off to give ya'll some "bond" time.
good luck

I went back out, and check the fluid level properly (warmed up), and severel readings, it still seemed ok. I dont have a lift available but I slid as far under it as I could while it was runing and noticed an intermitant hissing sound, I felt aroud where I could and did not feel any air or loose hoses. Is the hissing normal?

Do a search on this site under recommended technicians in that area. Since the fluid level is ok it sounds like you have a problem more serious than looking underneath is going to resolve. Can't say I have ever heard a hissing sound but you may want to look around real good to see if the vacuum line to the modulator is off. This should not stop it from working though.

Start with the simple stuff first, check the shift linkage. Will it start in reverse or drive, do the back up lights come on in reverse. If you put it in nuetral, will the car roll? Does the tranny make any sounds as you move the shifter while running?
