Those are chassis numbers - MB uses numbers to designate designs. W124 was produced from 1985 to 1993, I think, etc. Part numbers for parts specific to that chassis will start with the chassis # (124 xx xx xx). Confusion comes from when that part is used on other designs, too -- the new links for the rear suspension for the W124 are actually W210 parts, the steering coupler for my W108 is actually originally a W111 part number, superceded by a W115 part number, etc.
The chassis number will be the first part of the VIN number on older cars (e.g 108.068 12 xxxxx) designating design and variation (in this case a 280 SEL 4.5 with left hand drive and auto tranny). Use that number if there is any question about what part to order. Later models have a "US style" VIN, but it still includes the chassis number along with some letters and always starts WDB Peter

W stands for standard wheelbase.
V stands for long wheelbase. C stands for coupe. R stands for roadster. That's all I know.

In w116, W="Wagen" meaning passenger car to the factory. I don't think "V" was used until the 140 cars?
I am going to guess that V stands for "Voll"? Someone around here probably knows.

Whitcre, which model do you have? The 124 series was produced from 1985 (we saw them as model year 1986) to 1995. MB is not the only company to use an internal letter or numbering system. The Camaros and Firebirds are "F-body" cars. What makes it easy for ordering parts on a Benz is most of them are the same within a given series. For example the headlight assy. on a 300E is the same as the 300TE, 300D, 300TD, 400E etc. Unlike most car companies, the sales model designation on a Benz is dependant on the engine under the hood. Most other parts are interchangable.
So alot of times you will see people referring to the chassis number in a discussion because the issue they are talking about is common to that chassis (body style). Engine/transmission specific question get split up between gasoline (Tech forum) and diesels (Diesel forum).
