Lightbulb Check engine light

Hello everyone, I am back again with another problem on my wife's 1994 E-420. Now every 3 or 4 days the check engine light comes on. I reset the computer with the push button and the only number that seems to flash is the # 4 it will flash about 25 times. I hold the PB in for about 20 seconds to delete the code and then it finally stops flashing. She will drive the car for about 2 to 3 day's with no problem and then the check engine light comes on again?? How do I get a list of the engine codes, and where do I get them.I am also tryoing to get a technical repair manual for this E-420 and do not know where to get a hold of one, any suggestions from anyone. Thanks again for any and all help from everyone, and I am sorry to be a pain, but my wife loves this car and I am trying my best to get it going right, Can't afford the high repair bills it will entail at a dealer and will try and keep it going myself. Thanks again. Ben

Bigben, I looked up code 25 for your car and..

code 25 for your car in the Diagnostic Module (DM) states the following: "Knock Sensors faulty"
So you need to start there. Are you sure it is code 25?
Maybe someone can tell you what to look for and where to find this sensor. Not sure how easy or hard to do it yourself as I never had to replace this sensor before, but I know it is a screw type sensor that screws to your engine block and has a plug that connects to a connector and monitors the knocking of your engine and sends info to the brain of your car so it will adjust fuel mixture etc.. I am sure the pros here can give you better explanation.. Usually this sensor doesn’t go bad that often, so make sure it is code 25 (count the LED flashes right).

By the way, the fact that you clear the code and then the check engine light coming back 2-3 days later mean you got a problem and you need to take care of it. The code coming back mainly tells you there is a fault that requires attention (fix) and clearing the code as you describe doesn't mean the problem went away. You need to locate a good Independent mechanic familiar with your car and see if he can diagnose this for you. Or go se the MB dealer… one thing for sure, the knock sensor is not very cheap and you better off buying it from fastlane here or any MB parts store as the dealer going to charge an arm and leg for it.

Do a search by clicking the above "search" button and type things like "Check Engine Light" etc and do a search and you'll find plenty of info on how to read codes and clear them etc.. You need to make sure that the 25 DTC is the only code (problem) you have... With some time and effort you can find out a lot by using the search capability above. Let me know what yoy find out. Good Luck...

Again thanks, Joe, I will check or count how many time it flashes for sure tonight or tomorrow when my wife comes home from work. You have me thinking that maybe my wife put in the wron gas the last time she filled up, I guess that is possible?? I will have to ask her. Is there a listing for engine codes some where that I can get a hold of? I also did not realize that you had to count the number of times the red light flashes on the unit, I jsut deceided to do that while I was holding the button in. Thanks

A good start is to visit JimF's website at:

http://pages.prodigy.net/jforgione/MB_S500.html

Check his item #6 on the list. Also great site for many troubleshooting techniques etc. Jim is an active member of this board as well. I first dealt with him after reading about his Cool Harness and found out this thing works great for my car (95 E420) as this engine tends to run hotter than I’d like it to especially down here in Texas. You may consider getting one for your car. I don't mind giving Jim an endorsement since I am using his product and very satisfied with it.

Make sure you read up on the proper way to read the LED flashes when reading DTC codes. You only need to press the LED for ~4 seconds then let go and then start counting. Once you finish the count, do the same again to make sure you only have same number of LED counts (thus same error). Write it down. To erase the code, you need to press and hold the button for 8-9 second AFTER it counts the error flashes as described above. After clearing the code, you should get only 1 flash when attempting to read the LED flashes. Again, refer to Jim's site for more details and he also has a list of all the error codes that should also match your car model.

If it does flash . . .

25 times, it also could be the DI Module. Check its operation as described in Menu #5. The module is located on the driver's side fender wall and looks like the picture.

What you really need to do is get the codes read (by a scanner) in the other modules to see what's wrong.

check engine light

Well here goes, the car just came in and the check engine light was on again, checked the code and it flashed 26 times, I checked the site that you told me to and according to the codes, if they a-420 it is Upshift delay 1 to 2 Model 1213.034. I have no idea what this means and how to repair the problem?? I let the code finish out and then held the PB for about 20 sec. and hit the PB again and the same code came up. I then turned off the key and turned it back on again and tried the codes and it did not flash even once. It just turned red when I puched the button. Am I also doing something wrong, I was told that it would flash once.?? Help

DTC 26 for the Diag Module . . .

is "Upshift delay faulty". That probably means that a vacuum line is broken someplace in that chain.

When you reset the DTC by holding the button down for 10 secs, the LED may not flash any 'blinks' until the system 'resinks' itself. So that's not unusual.

Hello Jim, Thanks for all of the help with my problem, I will check out all of the vacuum lines this weekend to see if any are loose or broken or pinched, that is if we do not get any snow. I surly appreciate everyones help. As I have said this is the first Mercedes that I have owned and do not have any idea of it's quirks and or problems, but I will keep trying and learning, I have also been told that on the 1994-E420 that there are common fault codes on this vehicle one is code # 5 and code # 26 which I have only one of them and I hope that I do not get another one. I will check the vacuum lines and let you know how I make out. Any other help is greatly appreciated. Thank you very much to all on the forum that have tried to help me with my problems. Ben

Angry

Well here I am again, I checed all of the vacuum lines that I could possibly see, and could not find any broken or loose, even used Carb. cleaner on them to see if engine would run any different, by spraying them. Nope, also check engine light came on again, rechecked the code, blinked 26 times again?? Is there some particular place to check for a broken or loose line, that I may have over looked. Really at a loss now.

It REALLY could be. . .

a bad upshift module.

Question: when you drive the car cold, first thing in the morning, does the car stay in first for a few minutes before shifting into high gear?

If the answer is NO, then probably the module is 'gone'. It should keep the tranny in low gear before shifting when the car is cold.

Check it out and let us know.

Jim, I will check after the snow leaves the ground. My wife drives the car most of the time, I very rarely get to drive it, I use the toyota 4 runner most of the time, where abouts is the shift module located, just in case I have to change it?? is there a check for the module to see if it is bad or does it just go bad. How long does it take or supposed to take to shift when the auto is cold. Hey I really appreciate all of the help, The Mercedes it a great running and comfortable car, but parts are sure expensive to repair them, first one that I have owned, really do like it. Ben

My mechanic tells me that a fault code for the upshift delay valve is 90% of the time a problem with the upshift delay valve holding vacum.

It is located on the side of the transmission.

It is a common failure part, and costs abut $250-ish for the part.
