w140 temperture gauge erratic

Took a recent trip through So Cal where I noticed the temp gauge to start going up, then suddenly it would return to normal, with no real changes otherwise. There is no coolant leak, no other guage changes. Ideas? (All maintenance, including coolant changes are UTD, with nothing done recently)
Thanks.

My initial guess would be a faulty or sticking thermostat...cheap fix...
