'86 300SDL: Temp selector wheel backlight?

Would appreciate some help here, guys. The backlight for my temperature-setting wheel on an 1986 300SDL is out. I took the whole temp section out of the dash enough to see that there aren't any fiber-optics going into the wheel housing. There are optics for the other switches though. There is a big connector with about 15-20 wires that connects behind the temp wheel, though not directly into the wheel housing itself. Anyone know if the light is fixable and how? Thanks.

This is a vague memory from taking apart the ACC pushbutton unit on my 1987 300D, and your unit should be similar.

I think there are two light bulbs in the unit, and the roller wheel gets its light by a plastic optic rod from the left light bulb. So you really should see that the whole left side of the pushbutton unit is dimmer.

To replace the lights, you have to remove the woodgrain panel, and then there are some pretty small holes through which you can access the "grain of wheat" light bulbs. In some cases these holes may be covered with a small piece of tape.

I didn't see any optics running to that side of the unit. I figured what you're saying, that there's gotta be a bulb in there somewhere. The unit didn't look like it could ... or should.. be opened. I'll take another look. Thanks Ken.

Although not very clear. Here is a picture of the right half of the backside of the ACC. You can see 2 sockets for bulbs, one of which is at the wheel. In total there are 4 (at least on my 83SD) and would assume that your running bulbs as well. In my car it is on a blue and white wire string that has a total of 5 bulbs. 4 for the ACC and one for the fiber optic octopus.

My 85 300D is like that, Don, but I don't think this 86 300SDL is. I popped the whole heat/ac control panel out literally five minutes ago and I'm examining it now. The whole bottom half of the unit appears to be somewhat sealed. There's two screws underneath the bottom..... we shall see. If I can find the damn camera I'll post a pix or two.

The 86/87 ACC is entirely different and uses really small bulbs that are mounted inside the front of it. There is a facility for replacing the bulbs without removing the unit from the dash, but requires some kind of tool to grab the bulbs through some pretty small access holes. Perhaps something like shrink tubing might work. For my part I replaced the bulbs when the thing was apart for soldering rework.

If I have another bulb shoot I'm going to try the shrink tubing so I don't have to take the darned think out and apart.

I saw the two bulbs in the front after removing the wood front. I had to step away from it for a while and I just got back. You're right, Ken, about them being recessed. Tweezers should let you get them out. The smaller/thinner the tweezers, the better. Thanks everyone for the help. BTW, the replacement bulb I got from Pep Boys is # 2721 from Sylvania. It's the same bulb for the 300D's instrument cluster. Cheers.
