I am getting ready to have the timing chain on my 1986 300E replaced. Outside of the chain, tensioner, gaskets and water pump, what else has to be changed. For parts alone what type of price am I looking at? So far for parts and labor I have gotten a price of $350- to $400-. Does this sound right? It sounds fair to me. What should I expect?

Sounds real fair, considering a new waterpump goes for about $200 or so. To be really honest with you, that price spread sounds kinda low, but, I don't do that kind of work for a living so I really don't know for sure. Maybe Donnie or Steve can ballpark that for you.

I just had the same work done on my 91 190e 2.6 within the last two weeks - ouch :(
Here was the breakdown: Timing Chain: Labor for chain and tensioner: $324 Parts: Timing Chain, Chain Tensioner, Camshaft Seal, Front Timing Chain Cover Gasket, Valve Cover Gasket: $103 Total: $428 Water Pump: Labor: Remove and replace water-pump and bypass hose, remove and replace thermostat and upper/lower radiator hoses: $400 Parts: Pump ($232), Hoses and Thermostat: $61 Total: $693 The chain job was fine, but the water pump job was more than I expected. For those of you in the know, are these prices reasonable or did I pay too much? Thanks, Rick |
I think the prices are in line, we quote 550 for the pump replacement however.
