16v Won't Start

Hi, I can't seem to get my 86 190E 16v to start. It turns over and the timing chain is fine. It's getting fuel and spark, but I read here: 190E 16v won't start that the ignition coil can show fire but under compression not fire. Is there anyway I can test the coil?

Also, I broke the hose circled in the picture below, and I completely removed it. Do I need that hose for the car to start even though it wasn't starting before I broke the hose?

Or, does anyone have some other ideas as to why my car wont start?

Thanks

Did you happen to do something before this not start comes about. Did you try to change the mixture or any thing at all. If you can give us a little history of maintenance and what was the last thing you did to the car, we may be able to help you batter

The last thing I did to the car was change the distributor cap and rotor, and that was about 1 month before the car stopped runnig.
The day it died it was real slow turning over, and it was making a bad rattling sound from the engine. So, I pulled over on the side of the road to have a look, and it died and wouldn't start after that.

Did you replace that hose? Crankcase pressure is vented back to the intake track with that hose and it connects to the auxillary air regulator/idle control valve. If you didn't seal the end near the valve then you have one BIG vacuum leak and there is no way it's going to run.

I just ordered the hose form MercedesShop.com for $11 plus shipping.
Thats where I found out about this great forum.
Even without the hose I got the car to start, but it dies after 5 seconds or so. I'm assuming it's because I'm missing that hose.
I'm just glad I finally got it to start.

Thanks for all of your help.
