W140 - front end shake - poss solution

I have had problems with 50mph front end / steering shake ever since I bought my '93 S500 18 months ago. I've had the wheels balanced sevaral times, ball joints, bushes etc with no effect. I have just replaced the brake rotors - and the shake has gone!

May be worth a try for anyone with the same problem.

Andy :)

Have 92 600 sel. 2 of my wheels were bent, so I had them straightened. 1 Continental tire seemed slightly out of round, but wheels and tires balanced. Still some slight wheel shimmy can be felt. I am replacing my rear hyd/pneu shocks, and brake pads and rotors/discs all around now. I am hoping you are right about the 50-75 mph wheel shimmy. I should know within a week.

Hello all!
I have the very same problem with my 93 S500.
The steering shimmy just don't go away.

Andy, please can you give me more details about the brake rotors that you replace?

The brake rotors is what support the brake discs isn't it? how does they have tear, the bearings are the elements that absorve the loads!

Did you change them as well as the wheel bearings?

Thanks in advance

Front shimmy/ Rotors ?

I just replaced rotors all around(and pads, etc)and I still have a slight shimmy. When i had a couple wheels straightened last month, the guys asked me to get the rotors changed and then bring the 600 back for a wheel and tire checkout. I'll try mto get that done in the next couple weeks and post my results. Unfortunately, the rotor changeout didn't take away the shimmy by itself.

The Rotors will cause a Vibration when the brakes are used
NOT when driving at highway speeds ...

Have the LOWER control arm bushings been replaced?
I Have Seen several complain of this and the Bushings were worn...Also Go to a High End Tire shop and have the Wheels Balanced ON THE CAR!...It Makes a Big Difference

I was going to make that statement about rotors only causing shimmy when braking, but one should never say never and in thinking about it, the possibility exists for the rotor to be thicker or mounted on some debris in such a way as to put run-out into the wheel.

I have never seen it and I have seen scads of shimmies due to the soft lower control arms. But if he says it got rid of the vibration, I had to think of how it could do it. Thats how!
