Smile Last Call

"Last Call" has a few meanings, other than what a bartender would say around closing time....LOL! But the meaning I am referring to is a bad fuel distributor is the Last Call that you want to make while repairing your car.

You made mention that you installed a used fuel dist. and nothing changed. Have you gone back to the fuel dist. that you just took off and re-installed it to verify that you have the same issues?

Believe me, I am, and have been running my flooding issues down like a cat running across a hot tin roof in July! I would love to be able to crank up my 300E and drive to the grocery store and back (don't want to get my hopes up too high) but flooding is still present.

Rust attacked my fuel system, from the fuel sending unit in the tank being faulty. I had the engine running like a freshly oiled Singer at the factory show-room, and then started driving for a test. About 4 miles the engine started dying out, and I had to pull over (at 2am...so don't go for a test drive after sun down LOL! ). My fabulous running engine has been a faint memory as I work on obtaining that special feel and sound that I experienced those precious 4 miles!

Locate the return line that is connected to the fuel pressure regulator (the that leads into the firewall) and then start your testing procedure, but first remove the gas cap and if you have someone that is able to assist you, ask them to listen for air pressure noise at the gas nozzle where the cap fits.

Hope this helps, and good luck on the test! Hope you locate your problem area before the new year, because that's my goal!

Will keep you posted as to my test results.

LOL...u kill me dude!

I changed my FD 2 months ago and the problem went away.

Now it's back.

But my shade-tree skills enable me to tune the car such that it's still driveable, albeit running rich (low mpg) but smoking lightly instead of killing the motorcyclists behind me.

Don't have the old FD coz I bought the used one on a part-exchange basis.

FPReg is new.

Don't wanna have to get another FD coz it's ridiculous (gone bad in just 2 months?)!

I'll be waiting for news from you.

Tks.

What was the situation with the FD that you just got 2 months ago? Had it been sitting on an engine that has not been in operation since God knows when? Was there fuel in it, and/or the lines...and were the lines connected, or did you just pick-up and pay?

I still think you should do the fuel return by-pass test. At next light I am! LOL! The minute I get positive results (good or bad....running or flooding) I'll post the results here. I'm now thinking of taking photos of my car and making prints to sell!!! LOL!! Maybe then someone can get some satisfaction out of this car!

At least you can tune your engine to drive the car! So don't feel too bad, because my engine floods so bad that in order for me to get the new tires in another spot (to prevent flat spots) I'll have to jack the car up and spin them with my hand! ....It gives new meaning to "Going for a Spin?"...huh?

hehe...

I picked up my FD unassembled from the engine by the time I arrived so I don't know if it's been sitting for a while, but the place of storage is indoors that's for sure.

Don't think that helps at all, but it was running well for 2 months...even managed to get 11km/litre for a couple of tanks!

On average, for the past 2 months, my fuel mileage was more or less 9 to 10 km/litre.

Before (on my old FD), I consistently got 10km/litre fuel mileage.

Yup...those were the days...sigh...

Before, the fuel mileage deteriorated over a couple of weeks.

This time, it went drastic overnight so maybe a restriction in the fuel line is what I should be gunning for!

I'll check it out.

Cheers.

I will explain what happens when the FD starts leaking.
It usually happens overnight. Every 3-4 months after enjoying driving my mercedes I park it at home, then in the morning it starts up like crap. It hesitates, doesn't idle right then dies. I smell lots of raw fuel, so I lean the mixture.

After leaning the mixture the car starts fine but it will hesitate heavily at idle and it starts vibrating the car at acceleration as if the motor mounts are gone bad.

When the FD is leaking the hesitation is caused by the leaking fuel that enters through the airflow housing into the cylinders #2 and #3. If you look at where the leaking fuel goes to, you will see that #2 and #3 cylinder will suck all the fuel that is leaking. Consequenlty, the #1 and #4 cylinders will run lean because we adjusted them to be lean and the other two will run rich. This causes the vibrating hesitation.

Did you look into the airflow housing to see if your FD is leaking?
Can you try to lean the mixture even more?
