I'm helping a friend with his '85 euro 280 SL. The A/C didn't work when he got the car, and a quick check revealed that it was completely empty of freon. Bypassing the low pressure switch causes the compressor (York piston type) to run when the temp wheels on the console are set to the blue zone and the a/c rocker switch is on, and the compressor is smooth and quiet. My questions are: are these systems efficient when they work? (interior seems like a small area to cool) Are there any known weak spots where leaks frequently occur? What would be involved in converting this system to R-134, and would it function adequately if so converted? Thanks in advance for any advice!
Colin

Don't convert.

You will have to replace the hoses if you do. I have seen many dry out if the hoses are not replaced.

Just find the leak and repair it. I have seen many leak at the front of the compressor.

I would definitely not retro-fit for two good reasons. First York 2 cyl compressors are not suitable for retro fit.
And second and most important an 85 should have a nipondenso compressor which leads me to believe your grey market car has grey A/C (not factory). The SLs never had great A/C but they had the worst of hang on units.

I never like to retro-fit marginal systems. The factory system on 107 SLs approached being marginal, the after markets were worse than marginal. The biggest problem was that you couldn't put the evaporator in the right place without the factory box.

Steve,
This car has what appears to be factory a/c. The console is obviously factory and has the dual zone temp controls. (One temp "thermostat" wheel for each side of the car) Is it possible that the York compressor was used only on six-cylinder models? It does not appear to have been cobbled on to the engine. Anyway, I will tell him to have the leak fixed and charge it with R-12, which seems like the best bet.

I could be wrong about the compressor on SLs. On 126 bodies the 110 motort got a Nippondenso in at least 84. They left so many things alone on the SL, maybe they did that also.
