Didn't get too far. After it warmed up for a while, idle speed in park shot up to 1500rpm. 800 in drive. Another set-back. I'm guessing I put the airflow put on incorrectly? Frustrating.

Mike

Unplugged the potentiometer and restarted. Idle went to 1500 again, but then bounced back and forth and settle on about 700 in park, 550 in drive. Runs rough with pot unplugged. So I am guessing an adjustemnt needs to be made to the position of the pot. What is the best way to do this? Car running? measure voltage from pins with the connection unplugged?

Do it with car running at idle. Slip the plug on the pot part way off, far enough to connect voltmeter to pin 1 and 2 if I remember right. Look for .7 volts +- .25.

update

ECM arrived and so did the nicer weather. I set the pot back up correctly as per Brew's instructions- everything normal again. Except of course the 10%. Soooo... I am looking at my ECM and it looks like this:

the ECM I received looks like this:

THe part numbers are different and are as follows:

The ECM I received has these part #s
Bosch- 0 265 101 018
MBZ- 005 545 2132

the ECM that is currently in my car has these part numbers:
Bosch- 0280 800 364
MBZ- 009 545 1132 [02]

This does not look good.

When I ordered the part I specifically ordered a used 300SE ECM.

The new one is a ABS controller. Its amazing how stupid junkyards can be. You would think that since all these parts have definative part numbers writen on them they could look every once in a while. Especially since they ain't got a clue otherwise!

Well this is just swell. Looks like it will be another week before this ordeal can possibly come to an end.

Thanks for the reply. Mike

A real ECM finally arrived today. Bosch part number is the same, but MB part number differs slightly-

ECM currently in car- 009 545 1132 [02]
Part I received - 011 545 0232 [09]

Please tell me this is the right part.

Thanks, Mike

The one in my 1990 300E is 011 545 00 32 much like your new one.

Wish I knew what the different numbers mean.

I imagine the place you got it has an interchange manual of some sort.

Just a question, but has the Fuel pressure and fuel pressure regulator been checked?

What about the short harness from the idle speed regulator to the mounting point on the intake runner, these can go bad and contribute to idle weirdness.

I called Bosch yesterday and they told me it was the same part. The guy gave me a bunch of MBZ part numbers and said he didn't know why they changed them as the part was the same.

So I plugged it in.

So far so good. Drove the car hard for a couple of hours and it ran normal again, normal numbers too. Has been starting fine since.

Looks like she's fixed

Thanks to: brewtoo, mhinghrim, steve and others for helping me out. You guys really know your stuff.

Now I can get to work on some smaller problems.

Mike

UK- fuel pressure checked out fine one year ago. Idle seems fine.
