Is car mileage stored in electronics?

Was wondering how to verify the mileage on the counter, to know if it shows the correct number. Is it perhaps stored in the electronics aswell?

On later model cars with electronic odometer displays, the accumulated mileage is stored in the electronics. On older models with a gear driven mechanical odometer off the speedo head, the mileage is usually not stored electronically.
