1983 240D trans replace--How do I get the Drive shaft back on??

I know the driveshaft came off easily. I cant get it Back on. I havethe Car on jackstands and the transmission back in. I know the Driveshaft has a Big nut about 33% of the way down, and I vaguely remember unscrewing the 2 parts of the driveshaft about 4 years ago, but the the Driveshaft wont come apart this time.

How do I get the driveshaft back in? Its cold and raining and I need this car by Xmas!!

You got it right about that nut. It's for the spline, once you loosen it, the shaft should slide into the splines and make the room you'll need to re-install.

Spray it with some Liq wrench and let sit for a while (if/when you get the shaft loose, mark the front and rear shaft so you can re-assy the same way, pull the front shaft off and lube the splines of the rear with synth grease and run some grease in the end of the front shaft, this will affect easier dis-assy a few years from now.)

If you just can't get that nut loose, you can jack up the rear end, support the subframe and then un-bolt the diff mount from the car (two bolts) and let the diff drop. If this doesn't give enough clearance (worked for me), then you can also un-bolt the rear shaft (easier to pry on, get to, etc.), hook up the front with the rear dangling and the center mount D/C'd. Once the front is bolted together, re-mount the center support, then work on the rear. With the diff low, you "should" be able to pry the disk back together.

If I were close, I'd come over and do it for you.

Good luck. I'l be cussing right along with you, have to remove my shaft again too!

My transmission under rebuild....

The tranny I installed from the junkyard (with all new seals, paint) feels like it has a synchro for 4th going out (or gone).

Everytime I get 4th gear, it grinds, no matter if I have the clutch in for minutes, it still grinds or ticks when going in.

Haven't cracked one of these, but I have one that grimgaunt left here and may rebuild that one, swap it in, then rebuild the one I have in the car and sell it for him?

So what's your opinion of this issue? Think it's a synchro? Your's do that?

I would guess your spring is gone on the 4th gear synchro

I couldnt downshift from 4th to 3rd and got the same grinding noise--when i did the rebuild I found that the 3rd gear synchro spring had worked loose and had been chewed up probably because of poor maintenance and use of 90 W gear oil..
