Mobil 1 0W-40 oil sample results!!
Hi all, I just received the oil sample results from Blackstone Labs on my wifes C230 yesterday and the Mobil 1 did an excellent job. I can't attach the .pdf here so I'll just type in the results. A little background on this sample, Mobil 1 0W-40, with 4950 miles on it, I use a STP oil filter and a K&N air filter. Her car now has 60k miles on it.
Aluminum 2 Chromium 0 Iron 5 Copper 4 Lead 1 Tin 0 Moly 66 Nickel 0 Manganese 0 Silver 0 Titanium 0 Potassium 0 Boron 134 Silicon 3 Sodium 5 Calcium 2537 Magnesium 20 Phos 743 Zinc 876 Barium 0 TBN 5.8 SUS Vis @ 210'F 65.9 Flashpoint 360 Fuel .8% Insolubles .3% Here are the comments from Blackstone Labs: DALE: The universal averages column shows typical wear from this type of engine after about 4000 miles on the oil. Your oil was run 4950 miles, and wear levels read well below those averages. We did find a little bit of fuel dilution, which is common in engines that see a lot of city driving and/or idling. We don't consider it a problem until it reads above 2.0%. The TBN read 5.8, so this oil had plenty of active additive remaining when you changed it out. The oil could have gone longer, and your engine can take it, too! Try 5500 miles next time. I also sent in a sample of the ATF for this car as well, if anyone would like to see those results posted here let me know. |

yes STP from my local Autozone. They used to carry the Deutsch brand filters but switched to STP about a year ago. Believe it or not the STP brand filters have 5 more pleats than the Mann or hastings filters and have more ribs on the internal cage of the filter. They are impressive looking and obviously do an excellent job of filtering...

It appears I forgot to post the universal averages for this sample, so in case these numbers don't mean much to you I'll re-do it with the first column being actual values and the second column stating universal averages.
Aluminum 2/3 Chromium 0/1 Iron 5/10 Copper 4/6 Lead 1/1 Tin 0/0 Moly 66/61 Nickel 0/0 Manganese 0/1 Silver 0/0 Titanium 0/0 Potassium 0/1 Boron 134/111 Silicon 3/9 Sodium 5/6 Calcium 2537/2235 Magnesium 20/500 Phos 743/829 Zinc 876/994 Barium 0/0 Notice how the iron level is half the normal average and the silicon is one third the average, and that's using a K&N filter!!! |

Who did the ananlysis and what do they charge? Do they provide sample containers? If you use your own, how do you decontaminate it?
Does higher than average calcium put your engine at risk for arthritis? Thanks, Sixto 95 S420 87 300SDL 83 300SD ... $950, see cars forum |

Oil analysis results available from these commercial outfits should only be considered as a rough guesstimate in most cases.
I have been in the lubricant business for 25 years and have seen thousands of lab reports. Unless the analysis has been made by an experience tech and the analysis machine (spectrometer) has been carefully cleaned and fine tuned/calibrated between each test, your report (which looks good) could be wrong. To confirm this, send two different samples of the same oil, from the same car, taken at the same time, under the same condition to 2 different labs and compare the results......... You'll be very surprised. Which of the 2 result is accurate??? You will never know. (I have done this test many many times to compare results from our own lab) jackd |

A New Jersey Mercedes tech, from headquaters stated that mobile 1 0/40 could go to 10,000 mixed driving and up to 18,000 of highway .I thought it was much but 5500 does not seem like much of a interval for mobile 1.
