I have a '95 C280 with a 722.424 auto transmission. I've read that most MB transmissions either start out in 2nd gear and use 1st gear only under load conditions and that some can be "switched" between 1st and 2nd gear starts. Mine always starts in 1st under all conditions. Is this correct for this transmission? Or is there a problem.

From 1990-1992 MB decided to start smaller engined cars in 1st gear, so yes it is normal! No (easy) way to change this on your car.

Thanks for the info. I think that starting in 1st gear in this car is acceptable and don't think I'd want to go through a lot to change it.
